Originally from Hamilton, the Spinney Brothers, Allan and Rick, moved to Nova Scotia with their family at an early age. They grew up in the rich farmland of the Annapolis Valley while gravitating - musically - to the sounds of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and Smiley Bates. Allan first picked up a guitar at the age of six, while brother Rick complemented this move with his first banjo years later. Their study of traditional bluegrass progressed as the two siblings worked hard to develop a distinctive sound.

In the long-lived bluegrass tradition of the blending of sibling brothers’ vocals, the Spinneys join great bluegrass brothers like the Monroes and the Stanleys. They embellish their homegrown sounds with the addition of a couple of strong players, Gary Dalrymple on mandolin and Terry Mumford on upright bass. Their collective talent is truly remarkable, combining virtuoso musicianship with spine-tingling harmonies. The Spinney Brothers are the real deal.

The Spinney Brothers have garnered an industry reputation as being top-notch professionals. Attention to detail has brought an impressive list of performance opportunities. They have shared the stage with country music star Ricky Skaggs, the Grammy-nominated Cherryholmes and Grand Ole Opry legend Del McCroury. Over the years they have released eight albums, their most recent, Side by Side, in 2010, as well as earning numerous East Coast Music Awards. They were inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

“The Spinney Brothers are a band that adheres to the traditional roots of bluegrass. They go the very core ... they are true professionals in every sense of the word.”
