Mary Gauthier
with Tania Elizabeth

GrassRoots Regina is pleased to present American alt-country singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier with Tania Elizabeth in concert.

Mary’s songs bleed authenticity, earned during her youth as a runaway, strung-out and drunk, in jail and in halfway houses. Her songs are lush with that turbulent history; her smoky raspy vocals and simple melodies craft a window into a broken soul.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

The Exchange, 2431 8th Avenue, Regina

Show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Admission: $15 advance $20 at the door.

Mary Gauthier was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and was given up for adoption by a mother she never knew until recently. At the age of 15, she famously stole her adoptive parents’ car and hit the road. It was the beginning of a downward spiral of substance abuse, multiple stints in detox and halfway houses, and squatting with friends. Despite her problems, she managed to attend Louisiana State University, studying philosophy, then continued her studies at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts. Upon completion of her studies she opened and successfully ran a restaurant in Boston for eleven years. Until the drudgery caught up with her and she had to run away ... again. The difference this time was that she finally got sober. When she did, the musical floodgates opened and the songwriting began.

Mary wrote her first song and released her debut album, Dixie Kitchen (1997), to critical acclaim, at the age of 35. She has gone on to release six more stellar albums. Her most recent release, The Foundling (2010), was produced in Toronto by Michael Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. It is her first concept album and defines the circumstances of her life, defining the emotional journey and aftermath of finding the mother who abandoned her at birth.

Widely hailed as one of the most important American songwriters to emerge in the last 15 years, often compared to Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier is a “truth singer”, an artist who sheds light on our human condition with uncompromising honesty. For her Regina show she will be joined by Tania Elizabeth (formerly of The Duhks) on fiddle.

“…Gauthier’s songs startle with authority and detail. If she keeps this up, one day she may assume the mantle of Johnny Cash…” - New York Daily News

“Clearly, Gauthier needed to make this album (The Foundling) for herself. That it turned out so well is a credit to an artist at the top of her awesome game.” - The Globe and Mail
