GrassRoots Regina is pleased to present Alberta's award-winning singer-songwriter John Wort Hannam in concert.
Hannam is one of Canada's best folk/roots singer-songwriters. He is a born storyteller with a keen eye for the quirky and lyrics that create stories behind the songs. Hannam has the unique ability to take the simple day-to-day dramas of common folk and turn those dramas into songs that map the landscapes of both the human heart and this vast continent of ours.
"It's really all very simple ... Hannam is one of the finest folk songwriters anywhere." - Swerve Magazine

John Wort Hannam was born in Saint Helier, Channel Islands, UK but subsequently relocated to Fort Macleod, Alberta. He became a high-school teacher and taught language arts on the largest reserve in Canada – The Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Confederacy. But in 1997 he heard a Loudon Wainwright III record and was hooked by the music and the stories. In 1998 he bought a guitar and learnt some chords. In 2002 he quit teaching and began to pursue the dream of being a working musician.
Hannam released his first album, Pocket Full of Holes, in 2002. From the beginning it was all there; the songs, the voice, the unique guitar stylings, the entertaining stage presence. Since then, his career has unfolded. His songwriting has gotten stronger and over the years has moved over to the more personal and universal. He has released seven highly acclaimed albums; his most recent, Acres of Elbow Room, in September 2018.
Over the last 18 years Hannam has been making music and touring across North America. Through his seven-album career span, his list of accolades and nominations continue to grow; awards from Canadian Folk Music, CBC Galaxie Rising Star, and Kerrville Texas New Folk, to name a few. For his Regina performance Hannam will be accompanied by Stephen Fletcher (keys) and Jason Valleau (upright bass).
