Ken Whiteley was born on April 30, 1951 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania to Canadian parents. The family relocated to Toronto when Ken was five years old. He started playing guitar when he was twelve and began his professional career in 1965 when he, along with his older brother Chris and Tom Evans, formed The Original Sloth Band which released three albums and toured extensively throughout the 70's. During this time he also performed and toured with Raffi and served as the artistic director of the Mariposa Folk Festival. Since then, he has gone on to enjoy a rich and varied musical career as a solo artist and in numerous collaborations, most notably, The Junior Jug Band during the 80's and Scarlett, Washington & Whiteley in the 90's. He currently performs regularly with The Beulah Band.
Ken is a prolific songwriter, a gifted and versatile instrumentalist and a powerful singer. His music communicates themes of freedom, love, spiritual aspiration and social comment. His encyclopedic knowledge of traditional folk and blues styles along with his entertaining blend of enthusiasm and respect for these traditions has made him a valued musician in the studio as well as on stage. For his Regina performance, Ken will be accompanied by The Beulah Band.
Throughout his career Ken has won numerous awards including a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Genie Award and Lifetime Achievement Awards fromboth Folk Music Ontario and the Mariposa Folk Festival.He has been nominated for seven JUNO Awards and fifteen Maple Blues Awards. Drawing on his incredibly rich background in blues, gospel and folk styles, Ken has played at virtually every major folk festival in Canada and performed and recorded with such legends as Pete Seeger, John Hammond Jr.,Tom Paxton, Blind John Davis, Stan Rogers, Penny Lang, Guy Davis and countless others
The Beulah Band is comprised of Rosalyn Dennett (Oh My Darling) on fiddle and vocals, Rob McLaren (Barrel Boys, Union Duke) on banjo and Gord Mowat (Dust Poets) on bass.
